Grandma's Legacy

My Grandma is eighty four years old and she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s four years ago. There are days when she cannot remember who I am but she never forgets how to quilt. Every stitch is hand sewn, every piece of material is cut out using a pattern and scissors. She never uses a sewing machine or anything else that would make it easier or quicker. She sewed he first quilt when she was seventeen years old using material from her childhood dresses. Over the years she has made approximately one hundred quilts ranging from baby size to king size. Some are more detailed then others but they all have one thing in common…they were made with love. There will be a time when my grandma is no longer with us but it comforts me to know that we will always have a piece of her in the quilts she left behind.
Grandma’s Quilt
Grandma sewed a quilt of love, each square a memory.
A patchwork of the things she taught, and all she gave to me.
The center square is from the heart and anchors all the rest
With the greatest love you’d hope to find,
A love that stood the test.
Each stitch binds me to her and though I cannot see
This quilt which Grandma crafted, I’ll carry it with me.
It covers me with love and joy and keeps her close to me…
This quilt which grandma crafted out of her loving memories.

I can only imagine the struggles she and you are going through; it's a tough condition. Ronald Reagan said it best: the long goodbye.
